World Blood Donor Day 2022: June 14 is observed as World Blood Donor Day to promote awareness of the need to donate blood and to thank unpaid voluntary blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. The day aims to encourage regular blood donation to ensure that all individuals have access to a safe, affordable and timely blood supply in times of emergency. The host country for World Blood Donor Day 2022 is Mexico. The global event will be held in Mexico City on June 14, 2022.

The theme of World Blood Donor Day 2022 is “Doing blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives.” It focuses on drawing attention to the roles that blood donors play in saving. The theme aims to highlight the need for committed donors to donate blood regularly throughout the year, to maintain adequate supplies and achieve universal and timely access to safe blood transfusions.

World Blood Donor Day: History

The World Health Organization initiated and declared June 14, the anniversary of Karl Landsteiner’s birth, as World Blood Donor Day in 2004. Nearly a year after this declaration, during the fifty-eighth session of the World Health Assembly in May 2005 in May 2005, the World Health Organization and its member 192 The United States launched Blood Donor Day to encourage all countries to recognize blood donors for their dedicated efforts to save lives.

Then the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was established with the aim of spreading global knowledge about the importance of safe blood donation by healthy people.

World Blood Donor Day: Importance

The day aims to raise awareness about donating blood and blood products used for transfusion and the crucial contribution of voluntary unpaid blood donors to the health system. The day also provides an opportunity to advocate for action for governments and national health authorities to ensure adequate resources and infrastructure development to facilitate blood collection from unpaid voluntary blood donors.
