Workers taken ill after suspected gas leak at apparel plant in Andhra Pradesh | Latest News India

The exact source of the leak was not immediately known but it is suspected to have emanated from a nearby veterinary medicine laboratory.

At least 150 garment factory workers, mostly women, fell ill after a gas leak occurred in the Special Economic Zone at Achyutapuram in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapally district around 8.30 pm on Tuesday.

The exact source of the leak was not immediately known but it is suspected to have emanated from a nearby veterinary medicine laboratory. On April 13, seven people were killed and 15 injured in an explosion at the laboratory.

“While many were treated at the factory, another 50 women workers were shifted to the NTR Government Hospital in Anakapalli in buses and cars,” said a police official, who did not wish to be named.

Workers complained of nausea and vomiting, some fainted, and 400 people were on shift at the time of the spill, he said. On June 3, a similar gas leak in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam led to the hospitalization of over 170 workers.
