Former Indian top seed Yuki Bambri lost to Spaniard Bernabé Zapata Miralles, 5-7. 6-1 in the first round of qualifying for the Wimbledon main draw on Monday. The 29-year-old entered the playoffs draw thanks to a protected classification due to a knee injury.
Bhambri made a strong start to the match, taking an early break and finding himself a 5-3 lead in the first set. However, Miralles was able to immediately retake the break and, after saving two serve points in the next match, went on to win 10 of the next 11 matches to eliminate the Indian from the event.
The 29-year-old received a difficult draw given the impressive results that Miralles have had recently. The Spaniard moved from qualifying to the fourth round at the French Open last month, beating Americans Taylor Fritz and John Isner before losing to Alexander Zverev. He is ranked 90th in the world and next faces France’s Antoine Huang.
Bambri was one of two Indians in the qualifying draw for the men’s singles event at Wimbledon. India’s No. 1 seed Ramkumar Ramanathan, the 19th seed, faces Viet Kopriva later in the day. Prajnesh Gunneswaran was at the top of the alternate list but ultimately failed to make the cut.
Sania Mirza, in her final year on the tour, is the only other Indian to be confirmed to appear at SW19 this year. The 35-year-old enters the main draw of the women’s doubles alongside Czech Lucy Hrdecka.
