Sunil and Nargis famously fell in love with the 1957 film Mother India on set. He was said to have come closer while recovering from injuries. The couple tied the knot on March 11, 1958. In the early 80s, Nargis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and soon he lost her.
When Nargis was admitted to a US hospital, he was in a coma. After this, the doctors instructed Sunil to turn off the ventilator because Nargis had been vegan for four months. Sunil refused to turn it off and then Nargis got out of a coma and he flew back to Mumbai. A few months after his return on May 3, 1981, Nargis died.
In an interview with Filmfare in 2018, Priya Dutt recalled how Sunil changed after Nargis’ death. He said, “After Mum died, our equation with our father changed. First was a disciplinarian. Our dining room conversation was never about movies. But since the death of his mother, he has completely changed. Shared many of their memories. As she put it, ‘People say that I loved her after she was rescued from a fire in the Mother India set. But I was saving somebody else. I fell in love with the woman she was. ”
Sunil’s acting career was as diverse as his personality, he acted, produced and directed films. His most memorable films as an actor include Mother India, Waqt, Humraj, Padosan, Muje Jeane Do, Gumra, Sujata, Mera Saya.
