At MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Anwar, who had a solid record against India, not only crushed Indian bowlers across the land but also scored the highest singles score at the time at One Day International (ODI).

Pakistan’s 189th opener surpassed the great West Indies Vivian Richards to achieve the feat, setting his own record long over the next 13 years.

The record was broken during the four-nation Independence Cup which included India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. In the sixth match of the tournament, archrivals India and Pakistan faced each other and the rest is history.

Batting first, Pakistan’s start wasn’t great as Abi Korovila knocked out Shahid Afried for just five runs. After Afridi’s departure, Anwar and Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja took charge of their roles as the duo added 86 runs in the second wicket. After that, Anwar and Ijaz Ahmed added 116 points for the third wicket. This was followed by a partnership of 84 departments between Enzam Al-Haq and Anwar.

Pakistan kept losing a wicket on one side, and on the other, Anwar stood tall. He broke a whopping five sixes and 22 limits as Pakistan posted a whopping 327 total to lose five wickets to India in their 50 overs quota.

Chasing 328 for the win, there was a moment when fans thought India might be able to break the record as Rahul Dravid and Vindo Cambly scored 107 and 65 respectively. However, after their departure, no other Indian player rose to the occasion and in the end, India lost the match by 35 points.

Later, India exited the event and Sri Lanka won the two-part final.
