Viswanathan Anand’s Dinner Selfie Has Present and Future of Indian Chess

Former World Champion Vishwanathan Anand recently posted a selfie from his dinner outing with chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa and top major Sandipan Chanda. The meeting of chess champions in India together in one frame made the internet buzz and the photo quickly went viral, garnering more than 38,000 likes on Twitter. “I went out playing chess to have dinner with Anna,” wrote Anand while posting the photo. While the former world champion used the hashtag #chennaichessolympiad in the post, the selfie appears to have been taken during the chess open in Norway that concluded on June 10.

In response to the photo, one user praised Anand for sharing it with the upcoming breed of Indian chess players and said it would help them get good results. “It’s good to see great legends like you interacting with the little ones. It means a lot to them and it will have good results. Thanks and keep it up,” wrote one user reacting to the photo.

Others were elated to see Sandipan after a long time. The response read: “It’s very rare to see a picture of Sandeban!!”.

Meanwhile, Anand finished third in the 2022 Norwegian Chess Championship after defeating Norway’s Aryan Taree in the Armageddon match after their classic encounter ended in a draw. Anand finished the tournament with 14.5 points, behind world champion Magnus Carlsen (16.5 points) and Azerbaijan’s Shkhryar Mamedyarov (15.5) points.

While Anand finished third, Rameshappu Pragnananda won the title in the Group A event held on the sidelines of the high-profile classic event featuring Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand. The 16-year-old Indian coach finished with 7.5 points from nine matches, defeating compatriot IM V Praneeth in the final round on Friday.

Bragnanandhav secured a point ahead of his closest rivals – Israeli international (IM) Marcel Efroemsky and Sweden’s I.M. Jung Min Seo, who stayed together in second place.

The 16-year-old rose to fame after finishing second in the Chessable Masters in the Champions Chess Tour a few weeks ago.
