Two men assaulted by mob over posts ‘supporting’ Nupur Sharma, two held

A man and another brother were attacked by a mob in Bhiwandi district of Thane city over social media posts in support of the arrested BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Police later arrested the two men who published the leaflets.

In the first case, 20-year-old Saad Ashfaq Ansari, a resident of Bhawandi, was assaulted by a mob on Sunday after his social media post went viral in support of Nupur Sharma.

Ansari was detained under Section 153a (Promotion of hostility between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth and residence) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, a crowd of people gathered outside Ansari’s house, and when he came out, they forced him to read “The Word”. Police said the gang members assaulted al-Ansari.

Police detained Ansari and later placed him under arrest on the basis of a complaint filed by Faraz Fazl Bahauding, better known as Baba. Bhiwandi police also decided to take action against those who gathered in front of Ansari’s house and attacked him. “We are in the process of filing the FIR against the mob in the Ansari case,” Deputy Police Commissioner (District 2) Yogesh Chavan said.

Police said security has been beefed up in the area to prevent any untoward incident.

In another incident on Sunday in Narbule district of Bhiwandi, a man was assaulted by some people in a crowd of up to 100 after his brother, Mukesh Chavan, 22, a pharmacy diploma student, posted on a social media site. In support of Sharma. Police said that after seeing the post, a mob gathered around Chavan’s house and assaulted his brother.

Narpoli police registered an FIR against Chavan and later arrested him for supporting Sharma and also registered an FIR against unknown persons for rioting, illegal assembly and assault.

Police in Bhawandi issued summons to Sharma on Saturday, asking her to appear before them.
