Twitter tests reminder feature for limited edition product sales

Twitter users will be able to receive reminders when retailers release limited-edition items for sale, through a new feature the social media company announced on Wednesday.

Twitter will test the feature with brands including Dior, Home Depot and Fossil. Luxury designers, street fashion brands, and other retailers have created a trend in recent years of releasing small batches of clothing and accessories that can often sell out in a matter of minutes and generate a buzz among shoppers.

Twitter’s new feature aims to discredit the platform as a place for real-time information and news.

“He’s directly inspired by the vibrant conversation about product launches on our service – from new game consoles and new handbags to the latest limited edition sneakers,” said Justin Huang, Product Manager for Task Force at Twitter.

When brands tweet about an upcoming product launch, users can click the “remind me” button in the tweet. Shoppers will receive an app notification 15 minutes before the item goes on sale and a second notification when it’s on sale.

The feature is only available to users in the US who use Apple devices to get started.

It comes as the Twitter deal that billionaire Elon Musk will get is still uncertain. Tesla’s CEO threatened in a filing Monday to walk away from the deal if he doesn’t get access to certain data.
