Relying on one person playing many roles has come at a heavy price for an American city. After their only clerk quit due to a lack of vacations, the town of Passadomekage, a small town of just 356 in the US state of Maine, was forced to close shop. Christine Bouchard took over as City Clerk around November 2020, and was assigned the responsibility of overseeing city elections. Over time, the roles and responsibilities associated with them continued to increase. By April 2022, Christine was responsible for vital records keeping, pet licensing, vehicle registration, and liaison to the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department of Pasdomkeg. She was also named the city’s deputy treasurer, according to a report by Bangor Daily News.
With so many roles assigned to one person, the authorities should have known better and not do anything to upset this multi-role player. Well, it turns out they didn’t. Kristen applied for two weeks of leave, which the authorities did not approve because there was no one to fill her place. As a result, Kristen handed in her resignation on April 7.
Now, with Christine gone, the city couldn’t inspect homes and businesses, appraise property, and register vehicles, among other jobs that were keeping the city in good shape. The city had to actually shut down. An official notice has been issued informing residents not to visit the office as it is closed due to a vacancy for a clerk.
According to a report by Newsweek, the position is still vacant and the city has advertisements for the role on multiple job boards.
