Chandigarh Police said Friday that Germany-based terrorist and Sikh Justice (SFJ) member Jaswinder Singh Multani was involved in planting an explosive device that was recovered, and eventually defused, near Brill Model Jail in April. 23.
Multani has links with Harvinder Singh Rinda, who is believed to be in Pakistan.
The police said that they added paragraphs of the Unlawful Activity (Prevention) Act 1967 in the FIR that were deposited at the Sector 49 police station after seizing the explosive.
Police said the involvement of JS Multani was identified after a technical investigation, in which mobile phone dump data was collected from a location near the prison, where a single call to an international number was reported as suspicious.
Police said that later, a second cell phone, with a detonator, was found near Brill Model Prison on April 28. Scrutiny of both cell phones led to JS Multani.
A police officer said, “Sections U/s 13, 18 and 20 of UAPA 1967 FIR have been added. All retrieved items have been deposited with the Food Security and Livelihood Registry for examination and further investigation into the case. During the investigation period, data was raised The area was flooded and CCTV footage near the prison was analyzed.During the analysis, several suspicious numbers were shortlisted.In further analysis, one mobile phone was found locked since the time of the accident.The mentioned number made one international call to Germany, which upon verification was found to have been conducted to JS Multani. JS Multani was earlier named as a suspect in terrorist activities.”
Police said they began meticulously combing the area for any further evidence, and on April 28 the team found a second mobile phone and a second detonator.
On checking the mobile, the police confirmed the link to Jaswinder Singh Multani.
