State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gita Balakrishna Reddy was arrested on Friday for staging a skit on June 2, Telangana Formation Day, in which actors mocked Chief Minister K Chandrashkar Rao and portrayed him in a negative light.
Hayathnagar Reddy Police arrested and detained him early Friday under sections IPC 114 (Current instigator at the commission of the offense), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to violate peace), 505 (2) (Statements causing public mischief, promoting hostility) p/s 109 .
In a statement, the police said: “In June, BJP chief Pandey Sanjay, Gita Balakrishna Reddy and Rani Rudrama, under the leadership of the state, organized an event marking Telangana Formation Day and misused the podium to perform a skit (hate act) with the assistance of a cultural team member at The BJP Darufu Yelana and insulted a person holding a constitutional office democratically elected by the people of the state and the same was broadcast on a Telugu TV news channel.”
Y Satish Reddy, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) social media coordinator filed a complaint along with a video of the sitcom at Hayathnagar Police Station, stating that the organizers had misused the platform to defame government schemes with false accusations against the Prime Minister and the government. On the basis of the written complaint, a case has been registered against Pandey Sanjay, Geeta Balakrishna Reddy, Rani Rudrama, Daruvo Yelana and his team. One of the officers said that during the sitcom, the actors made derogatory comments and personal attacks, called the state chief minister a drunkard, a cheater and so on. The FIR said this act was contrary to the democratic spirit and harmed the public will by personally targeting and defaming the elected government and state premier.
Pandey Sanjay Kumar and other BJP leaders condemned the arrest. What is the reason for the arrest? Did he commit a heinous crime? Is he a killer? Kumar asked why such rush to arrest him in the middle of the night.
