Tamil Nadu: Panneerselvam seeks postponement of AIADMK general council meet, team Edappadi rejects

AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Deputy Coordinator R Vaithiyalingam has written a letter to Co-Party Coordinator and Opposition Leader of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) requesting a postponement of the party’s General Council meeting scheduled for 23 June.

Panneerselvam, better known as OPS, has been learned that he claimed in the letter that the demand for a “single command” was raised at the county trustees’ meeting on June 14 without any prior notice. The meeting was held to discuss the decisions to be passed in the meeting of the General Council of the party.

Notably, OPS and EPS ran AIADMK in a ‘dual leadership’ arrangement following the death of former Prime Minister Jayalalithaa in 2016 and the removal of the then Interim Secretary General, VK Sasikala, from the party a year later.

Several staff members pleaded that they had not received the agenda for the General Council meeting. Legal experts felt that the meeting agenda needed to be determined in advance of the meeting. In view of the above situations, and in the interest of the party, we (Coordinator Bannerselfam and Co-Coordinator Balaniswamy) can postpone the meeting scheduled for June 23 and we can later discuss and decide the date, venue and timing of the next meeting,” Bannerselfam wrote in the letter.

Bannerselfam claimed that many in the party were upset that the decision to discuss the “one leadership” issue could turn into a law and order problem.

However, veteran AIADMK leader KP Munusamy, who is said to be a close friend of Palaniswami, confirmed in a press briefing on Monday, that the general council meeting will take place on schedule.

When asked about Bannerselfame’s letter, Monosami said he had neither received the letter nor had any knowledge of its content. He added that the decision not to invite any special guest to the General Council meeting was taken with the approval of Panneerselvam.

Asked if the meeting would take place if Bannerselfam decided to skip it, Monosami said he was confident OPS would take part in it.

He has been part of the party for many years, holding key positions in the organization. He is the party coordinator and we all accepted him as our leader. Monosami said he would definitely attend the General Council meeting, and I believe he and the co-coordinator would accept any decision made at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Suryamoorthy, an AIADMK worker in Dindigul, has filed a suit in Chennai court seeking to disrupt the general council meeting.
