Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss World 28 years ago on 21 May 1994. After dominating the 43rd edition of the prestigious beauty pageant, Sushmita became the first Indian woman to win the Miss World title. Sushmita marked the occasion with her photo on Twitter. She wrote, “Beautiful is a feeling. Wishes 28 years to India’s first Miss Universe !! Time flies … Beauty remains !!”
To mark the 28th anniversary of Sushmita’s historic victory, a fan page on Instagram posted a rare photo and video of the competition in the Philippines. Sushmita shared a black and white picture with a shimmering top and a skirt, @thejuniorsush wrote, “21.05.94 … Dearesssstttt Titu Dede Wishes 28th Anniversary !!! You are so proud of us !!! Our tribe is so proud !!! And, our country is so proud !!! I love you !! ”
In the throwback photo, Sushmita’s quote is also shown. “I believe in ambition rather than ambition, so my career aspiration is to be a successful model and then enter the creative field of plays, advertising or writing.” It is not clear whether Sushmita was mentioned in the interview she gave before or after she was crowned Miss World 1994.
In a one-minute clip, probably from 1995, shared with a throwback photo, Sushmita Sen is seen wearing an elaborate lehenga and a heavy dupatta on her head as she goes on stage. The Miss Universe crown and sash completed her look as she prepared to wear the next Miss Universe crown.
In the video, Miss Universe has asked her parents, family and her homeland to thank India. “Tonight I will only give my crown. But I will carry with me the beautiful memories and the heart of love that I have experienced during my reign. For this glorious moment, I must thank my motherland India and her proud people, my parents, my brother, my friends, These are the people who have made me what I am today and helped me realize my great potential. Come, God bless and peace, Jai Hind. “
Sushmita Sen became the 43rd Miss Universe in the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay, Philippines. He was crowned by Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico. That same year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was crowned Miss World 1994.
