Film composer Ilayaraja, veteran athlete PT Usha and filmmaker V Vijayendra Prasad were nominated to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Philanthropist Virendra Heggade was also named as the new member of the Upper House of Parliament.
Soon after, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent out congratulatory tweets for the eminent citizen, calling him an inspiration to every Indian.
While Usha’s achievements in sports are widely known, her work in mentoring budding sportspersons over the past several years is commendable, he said.
“The remarkable PT Usha Ji is an inspiration to every Indian. His achievements in sports are widely known but his work in mentoring budding athletes over the past several years is equally commendable. Congratulations to her on being nominated to the Rajya Sabha,” Modi wrote on Twitter.
The Prime Minister said that Ilayaraja’s creative genius has captivated people across generations. “His works beautifully reflect many emotions. His life journey is equally inspiring – he grew up from a humble background and achieved so much. Delighted to nominate him to the Rajya Sabha,” Modi wrote.
Prasad has been associated with the creative world for decades, the Prime Minister said. “His works showcase the glorious culture of India and have made a global mark. Congratulations to him for being nominated to the Rajya Sabha,” he said.
“Shri Virendra Heggade ji has been at the forefront of excellent social service. I had the opportunity to offer prayers at the Dharmasthala temple and witness the great work they are doing in health, education and culture. They will certainly enrich the proceedings of Parliament,” he wrote.
