Several injured as hostellers clash at Cotton University

Several students were injured in a clash between two inmates of Cotton University in Guwahati in the early hours of Saturday morning, officials said.
A group of boys’ hostel inmates allegedly threw bricks, bottles, and other objects at another hostel around 1.45 a.m., they said.

They added that several students, who were asleep at the time, were injured in the attack, and some tried to take revenge by throwing similar objects.
A university official said one of the students was seriously injured and taken to the Guwahati Medical College and hospital.

The events that led to the clash are unclear, but university sources said the campus was tense after the general secretary of the Students’ Union joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

University students, especially residents of several hostels, staged a demonstration on Thursday’s campus above it. They claimed that the students supported him as a political candidate and that it was “immoral” for him to join a political party.

Police said a case has been filed following the violence, and an investigation has begun.
