SC grants bail to Mohammed Zubair in all six cases registered across UP

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Muhammad Al-Zubair, one of the founders of ALT News, in all six cases filed against him across Uttar Pradesh for hurting religious sentiments through tweets.

The court has ordered that all cases against Al-Zubair arising from his tweets be referred to the Delhi Police Cell.

He described it as a “vicious circle” As Zubair is locked up in a new case once he is released on bail in an old case, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Uttar Pradesh government not to take any “urgent” action against him until the next session.

Zubair’s lawyer, Vrinda Grover, had lobbied the court for interim assistance as a court in Hathras was due to issue her order based on a petition from Uttar Pradesh Police requesting that Zubair be detained for 14 days. On 15 July, Hathras was granted a 14-day judicial detention by a court, after which Zubair was returned to Tihar Prison in Delhi.

Grover mentioned the case for an urgent hearing twice on Monday – first before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Nevada Ramana and then before a bench headed by Judge Chandrashod. While granting interim relief, the panel of judges Chandrachud and AS Bopanna agreed to hear the case on July 20.
