Box office troubles for Akshay Kumar’s epic historical film Samrat Prithviraj Continued as the film could only gross Rs 55 crore in its first week at the box office, according to early estimates. Written and directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the film is based on the life and times of Rajput Emperor Prithviraj Chauhan. The story is based on Chand Paradai’s epic poem Prithviraj Rasu. According to a Bollywood Hungama report, hitting the Rs 100 crore mark for a big budget epic is out of the question now.
Earlier, commercial analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the film’s six day numbers. He wrote, “#SamratPrithviraj continues to struggle…biz nationwide [multiplex] Faded Strings … Eyes $55.5 cr [+/-] Total in *week 1* … Friday 10.70 cr., Saturday 12.60 cr., Sunday 16.10 cr., Monday 5 cr., Tuesday 4.25 cr., Wednesday 3.60 cr. Manushi Chilar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Manav Vij, Ashutosh Rana and Sakshi Tanwar also star in the film, which has been tax-exempt in several states and comes with a declared budget of at least Rs 150 crore. Dwivedi had previously said he lived with the story for 18 years before making the movie. “Prithviraj is my dream project. It is a script that I have sponsored for a very long time due to the extensive research work that was required before I even tried to make a movie about this great mythical king. To be precise, the final research of Prithviraj took about six months for me to be completely satisfied that all A fact that has been verified many times.”
Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film two stars and wrote, “What Chandraprakash Dwivedi has done is improve the legend so that it is in sync with the prevailing national mood. Prithviraj is the Bharat actor when it was original, pure and untainted. How did the director who also made the amazing ‘Mohalla Asi’ film How amazing is this transformer? (Dwivedi has been recorded to say this is his passion project, and he’s been trying to launch it for a decade and more.) Or is it just a matter of being fit?”
