The Rajya Sabha victory of Pune Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee Dhananjay Mahadik has given confidence to party workers in Kolhapur in western Maharashtra, which is currently politically controlled by the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
In a thrilling contest, BJP’s Mahadik defeated Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Pawar and won the 6th and final Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra.
After the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, the BJP was set back in western Maharashtra.
BJP activists are desperate for the BJP to lose representation in the state assembly or the Lok Sabha, with the recent defeat of the by-election.
In the by-election in Kolhapur, BJP candidate Satyajit Kadam defeated Congress candidate Jayashree Jadhav, a shock to BJP state unit chief Chandrakant Patil in the area.
The recent victory of the powerful sugar tycoon Mahadik, who controls the Rajaram sugar factory, may help the party in the upcoming local body elections in the Zilla Parishad and Kolhapur Municipal Corporation.
Between 2014 and 2019, when the saffron party was in power, he stepped into the region, and the BJP made sure that the NCP and many Congressmen joined it. However, when the MVA came to power in 2019, the equation changed.
For the past two decades, the Mahadik family has been politically active in Kolhapur.
Commenting on Mahadik’s victory, Chandrakant Patil said the outcome of the upcoming election will reflect positive. “The party and its cadres are very happy with the victory. It has shown that many independent MLAs are not with the MVA. It has lost the confidence of the people.
Known for switching parties, Mahadik contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections against Sadashiva Mandlik of the NCP but lost. He emerged as an NCP member in 2014 as a Kolhapur MP. In 2019, he lost the LS election and defeated Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Mandlik. He later joined the BJP and began to control local politics. Gokul, a major cooperative, was once dominated by his family.
“My victory is credited to the tactics of BJP and party leader Devendra Fadnavis. “I will make sure that the party base is expanded in the coming days,” said Mahadik, who arrived in Pune on Saturday and met with two ill-fated BJP MLAs Laxman Jagatap and Mukta Tilak.
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said, “Maha Vikas Aghadi had a candidate from Kolhapur and we had a candidate from the same place. We are victorious and this is our birthday gift to the President of the party state unit, Patil, who celebrated his birthday on June 10th.
BJP leaders in western Maharashtra expressed happiness and put out various messages on social media as congratulations on the party’s victory. This victory marks a much-needed boost for party workers.
