‘Rishabh Pant Just a Young Man, Still Learning Captaincy’-Ricky Ponting

Mumbai: Delhi coach Ricky Bunting on Saturday backed Rishabh Pant after his strategic blunder cost the team a place in the play-offs, saying he is still young and learning the ropes of captain and remains the right choice for the job. With the Mumbai Indian at 95 to 3 on 14.3 overs while chasing a 160th goal, Pant made a strategic mistake as he refused to go to the DRS after Tim David threw the first ball of his innings and was not given a field verdict.

She returned to haunt DC as David slammed only 34 times from 11 balls with the help of two edges and four sixes to take the game out of DC’s grasp.

“Definitely, there is no doubt that Rishabh was the right choice for the captain even last season. Ponting said during the press conference after DC lost by five wickets to Michigan, “Rishab has done a fantastic job with the team after taking over from Shreyas (Ayer) After he was hit in the shoulder.

“… He is just young and still learning to drive. Being the captain of the T20 team, especially in the IPL tournament, which is a tournament of high pressure, is not an easy thing to do and unfortunately, everything you do will be scrutinized. He definitely has my full support.”

Ponting said he was “devastated” to see the match slip away but didn’t blame Punt for the loss.

“It’s always hard to put your finger on one side of the game. Top of the ranking our hit was poor, we were four behind 40, which is not the ideal way to start a T20, especially the big games you have to win,” he said.

“Tim David obviously played well. He may have been off the first ball but there are many aspects of the game that we will be disappointed with. Players need to learn from games like this.

“I’m very frustrated because the match got out of our hands, and we haven’t closed the match the last few times.”

Rival MI captain Rohit Sharma also threw his weight behind Pant, saying such moves happen on the cricket ground and he would come out stronger from the experience.

“He’s a good captain, last season we saw how he leads his team. Sometimes things don’t go well, you’ve been through such situations, such things happen on the ground, sometimes things don’t go your way,” he said.

“He can take a lot of learning and try to simplify things, he has a great mind, he reads the game well from behind, such moves can happen and it is important that you don’t doubt yourself. He will come back strong.”
