Ranchi on Boil Over Prophet Remark; CM Soren Orders Probe into Friday Stir, SIT Formed

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday ordered a high-level investigation into Friday’s violence in Ranchi, due to statements made by BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal against the Prophet Muhammad. A two-member panel has been formed to look into the bloody violence that rocked the state capital, killing two people and wounding at least 24 people.

According to Jharkhand police, a special investigation team has been set up and additional security forces have been deployed in other sensitive areas as well.

Officials said the two-member panel includes IAS Senior Officer Amitabh Kaushal and Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Sanjay Latkar. The officials added that the commission was asked to submit its report to the state government within a week.

Deputy Inspector General of Ranchi, Anish Gupta, said the SIT unit has also been set up. “Three FIRs have been submitted so far. Searches are underway to arrest those involved in the violence.

Police said prohibition orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were imposed in 10 districts of police stations, including Sukhdev Nagar, Lower Bazar, Daily Market and Hindbidi, to control any further blasts. They added that the internet has also been suspended in the area.

Ranchi Chief Inspector Surendra Kumar Jha has been taken to hospital with a head injury, officials said. Besides his head, they said, he had injuries to other parts of his body from being hit with stones.
