Rampur MLA Azam Khan walks out of jail day after SC grants him bail

Samajwadi Kabir and Rampur MLA leader Muhammad Azam Khan, who has been in prison for the past two years, was released from Sitapur Jail on Friday morning, a day after the arrest. The Supreme Court granted him bail In the case of land grab.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court exercised its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, referring to the “special” circumstances of the case.

Azam Khan was in prison after 81 cases were filed against him. After receiving bail orders in all 81 cases, Azam Khan was released this morning,” Suresh Singh, Director of Sitapur District Jail.

Azam Khan had run in the recent assembly elections from inside a private Rampur seat and won by a decent margin. After winning the assembly elections, he resigned as a member of Parliament.

Since the BJP came to power in 2017, as many as 81 cases have been registered against Azam Khan on various charges, including land grab, fraud and criminal trespass at various police stations in Rampur. In some cases, Azzam’s wife, Tanzim Fatima, and his son, Abdullah Azzam, are imprisoned. Fatima’s organization obtained bail in December 2020, and Muhammad Abdullah was released in January of this year.

Azam Khan is the founder and chancellor of Muhammad Ali Johar University in Rampur.

On February 26, 2020, Khan, his wife and son surrendered before a district court in Rampur in connection with a case related to forging Abdullah’s birth certificate. As many as 41 cases have been filed against Abdullah and 32 against Fatimah Tanzim. While in prison, Azam Khan was taken to Medanta Hospital in Lucknow after complaints of shortness of breath.

Recently, Azam Khan refused to meet Samajwadi Party MLA from Lucknow Ravidas Mehrotra. Mehrotra told reporters that he had gone to Sitapur to meet Khan at the direction of the party chief Akhilesh Yadav, two days after the socialist party chief Shivpal Yadav’s uncle met Khan inside the prison.

The Directorate of Enforcement is also investigating the money laundering case against Khan. A few months ago, the ED issued several notices to people who were said to have donated to the Maulana Muhammad Ali Johar Fund managed by Muhammad Ali Johar University. The Samajwadi Party alleged that the police were harassing Khan’s supporters and associates.

Recently, Azam Khan’s associates, including the public relations officer, were removed from Rampur by the district administration for a period of six months under the Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act.
