Punjabi film actor Rana Jung Bahadur was arrested on Wednesday, a day after a Jalandhar court rejected his anticipatory bail plea, for making “offensive” remarks about Bhagwan Balmiki in a TV show.

The remarks led to protests in Jalandhar, with members of the Balmiki community also calling for a bandh on July 11 if the police failed to arrest the actor.

Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said Rana was arrested under Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for hurting religious sentiments and relevant sections for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Castes. Tribal (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

    The Punjab Cabinet chaired by Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday gave final approval to the policy governing the decision to provide 600 units of free electricity per billing cycle to every household in the state with effect from July 1, 2022. According to the decision, Scheduled Caste, Non-BPL and Backward Class domestic consumers who are eligible for 400 free units (per billing cycle) will now get a subsidy of 600 units.
