Punjab cabinet approves policy of 600 units of free power

The Punjab Cabinet chaired by Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday gave final approval to the policy governing the state’s decision to provide 600 units of free electricity every billing cycle with effect from July 1, 2022.

All domestic consumers in the state will be eligible for zero bills if they consume up to 600 units in each billing cycle, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said.

This will give a break to domestic consumers who had to shell out huge amount every month as power tariff, he said.

As per the decision, Scheduled Caste (SC), Non-SC BPL and Backward Class (BC) household consumers who were entitled to 400 free units (per billing cycle) will now get a subsidy of 600 units.

Similarly, domestic consumers entitled to free electricity of 400 units of Punjab’s freedom fighters and their heirs (up to grandchildren) will also get a subsidy of 600 units per billing cycle.

In case, the consumption of SC, Non-SC BPL, BC and Freedom Fighters categories exceeds the units per billing cycle, they will pay only for units consumed up to 600 units along with full fixed charges, meter rents and applicable government charges.

Similarly, the Cabinet gave the green signal to waive off outstanding dues of all domestic consumers as on December 31, 2021 and till June 30, 2022. The move will provide relief to around 28.1 lakh domestic consumers. 1298 crores.
