Punjab assembly passes resolution against the Agnipath scheme

The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution against the centre’s Agnipath defensive recruitment scheme.

However, BJP MPs Ashwani Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan opposed the decision.

The decision was conveyed in the House of Representatives by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Mann, who was involved in discussing the decision, said he would soon raise the issue of Agnipath’s scheme with the Union Prime Minister and Home Secretary. Mann Agnipath strongly opposed, and said that this scheme was against the country’s youth.

Opposition leader and Congress legislator Bartap Singh Bajwa demanded the withdrawal of Agnipath’s scheme. Akali MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali also supported the decision and demanded that the scheme be reversed.

Protests erupted in various parts of the country after the center revealed Agnipath’s scheme to recruit young people between the ages of 17 and a half and 21 into the army, navy and air force, largely on a four-year contractual basis. It later eased the maximum enlistment age this year to 23.
