The Interstate Council, which works to promote and support cooperative federalism in the country, has been reconstituted, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as president and chief minister of all states and six union ministers as members. Ten union ministers will be permanent invitees to the Interstate Council, according to an official notification.
The government also reconstituted the Interstate Council Standing Committee headed by Federal Home Minister Amit Shah. While the Prime Minister is the chairman of the board, the chief ministers of all states and union territories who have a Legislative Assembly and officials of UTs who do not have a Legislative Assembly are appointed as members.
The union ministers appointed as council members are: Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Singh Tomar, Virendra Kumar, Hardeep Singh Puri, Nitin Gadkari, S Jaishankar, Arjun Munda, Piyush Goyal, Damendra Pradhan, Pralhad Joshi, Ashwini Vaishnau , Jagendra Singh Shekhawat, Kirin Reju and Bhubandar Yadav. The council’s mission is to create a strong institutional framework to promote and support cooperative federalism in the state, and to activate local councils and councils by organizing their periodic meetings.
It also facilitates the consideration of all outstanding and emerging issues of central relations between states by the District Councils and the Interstate Council, and establishes a sound system for monitoring the implementation of the recommendations of the Interstate and District Councils. . In a separate notice, the Union Home Ministry said the formation of the Interstate Council Standing Committee will be: Amit Shah (Chairman) while the members include Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Singh Tomar, Virendra Kumar and Jagendra Singh Shekhawat.
The Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh are also members of the Interstate Standing Committee. The Standing Committee shall hold constant consultations and take matters for consideration by the Council, and shall deal with all matters relating to the relations of the Center with the State before they are taken up in the Interstate Council.
The Standing Committee also monitors the implementation of the decisions taken based on the recommendations of the Council, and considers any other matter referred to it by the Chairman or the Council. The Standing Committee may, if necessary, invite experts and persons eminent in specific fields to benefit from their opinions while deliberating on relevant topics.
