June 14th marks the second anniversary of the actor’s death Susanth Singh Rajputwho died at the age of 34 in 2020. He was found hanged in the bedroom of his Mumbai apartment, and his death was initially ruled a suicide.
But a war of political influence and public pressure led to the start of a CBI investigation into the case, which is still under investigation. Media coverage of Susant’s death, which occurred during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, is often cited as an example of how bad news reporting in the country can be. When interest was at its peak, the nightly discussions revolved around prime-time news. Several angles were introduced, including the drug-related investigation that led to the arrest of Sushant’s friend Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Shweik. Riya has also been investigated for embezzlement of funds, after participating in legal proceedings against Sushant’s family.
But the debate that Sushant’s death did not start properly was the debate about mental health. The actor was reportedly seeking treatment for bipolar disorder, and was on medication intermittently. Two years on, here’s a look at the key players in the case, and what they’re doing now.
The actor spent almost a month in prison, before being released on bail. Having initially found herself in the middle of a media circus, she slowly began to appear in public. The paparazzi will see it, and the industry jobs will attend. However, there has been some controversy over her absence from early promotional material for her latest film, Month. She then attended the wedding of Farhan Akhtar and Shaibani Dandikar earlier this year. Recently, it was reported that she decided not to travel to Abu Dhabi to attend the IIFA Awards, after obtaining permission from the court to do so.
Rhea’s brother was also arrested by the FBI, and released on bail after a while. His Instagram DP still has a picture of him and Sushant together, and his latest Sushant related post came on the one year anniversary of the actor’s death. His Instagram profile has since been updated with travel photos and family photos.
Siddharth Bethany, who was a part of Sushant’s inner circle, was the one who discovered Sushant’s body. He subsequently appeared on several television news debates in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and was arrested by the NCB in the drug-related corner of the case. As of May 2022, he is not released on bail. “We requested his release on bail in January, but the court hearing has not yet taken place,” his lawyer, Tarek Syed, told Times last month. However, he obtained permission to attend his wedding in 2021, and gave up two weeks later.
Samuel Huckabee, the attorney whom Sushant personally brought to join his “professional team,” was living with the actor at the time of his death. Like Siddharth Bethany, he also appeared in television interviews in the aftermath of the incident, and was telling stories about Rhea and Sushant on national television. And like Siddharth, he married last year.
Shweta Singh Kirti
Possibly the most vocal of the three Susante sisters on social media, US-based Shweta Singh Kirti will be posting daily updates about Susante on Instagram and Twitter. It was she who fueled the “Justice for Susant Singh Rajput” social media trend just weeks after his death. But by her looks, the last post related to Sushant was shared on her Instagram profile on his birthday in January, earlier this year.
Shweta’s husband, Vishal Kirti, shared detailed blog posts about the late actor in the weeks following his death. These posts usually include portraits and other anecdotes about the actor. In his posts, he criticized Rhea’s comments against the Sussant family, and questioned the ethics and findings of a therapist who claimed Sussant was bipolar. But now, work-related posts are dominating his social media profiles. His last Sushant blog post was written a day before his first death anniversary in 2021. As per the looks, all Sushant-related posts are password protected, while his writing on other topics, such as the Afghanistan war and psychology, is free to be able to.
Riya had filed a preliminary information note against Priyanka for inciting Sushant’s suicide, by buying him medicine “with a fake prescription”. Priyanka and Susante’s other sister, Mitu, were both named to the FIR. But while the Bombay High Court has overturned the case against Mitu after the two sisters filed a motion to dismiss it last year, it turns out that there is ostensible evidence against Priyanka. Earlier this year, she said in a social media post that her brother’s autobiography should not be filmed until he gets “justice”. She was tweeting regularly about Sushant, and recently attended a prayer party for him with Mitu.

Like Priyanka, Mitu has also called for “justice” for her late brother in her latest social media post, which she shared on his birthday earlier this year. “Jan, I wish you all happiness and peace wherever you are in the abode of the divine. You lived like a king. Proud of you my pride. It’s just ki tum chale gaye and all my strength went with you.” “God bless you,” she wrote, adding screenshots of her tweets thanking Sushant fans. In one of those tweets, she wrote that her physical and mental health had “significantly deteriorated”, and that she was “disturbed” that people had apparently outgrown her. She said she would not stop fighting for her brother. In April, Priyanka and Mitu met at a prayer party for Sushant .
