No More Unknown Callers, Govt Working On Its Own ‘Truecaller-like’ Framework: Report

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is working on a new framework that will essentially light up a caller’s name on the recipient’s phone screen. Currently, the name flashes on the phone screen only when the number is saved in the contact list. According to PTI news agency, citing a “senior official,” Trai will soon begin consultations on framing a mechanism for a KYC-based caller’s name to flash on phone screens. There are apps like Truecaller that help users identify callers if the number has not been saved. However, there are limitations as most of the data on the app is crowdsourced.

PTI notes that Trai has received a reference to start a consultation on the same matter from the Department of Communications (DoT). Consultations on this matter are expected to begin within two months, Trai PD Chairman Vaghela said.

“We have just received a reference, and we will start working on this soon. The name according to KYC will appear when someone calls,” Vaguela told the news agency. According to DoT standards.

The move could bring transparency to the entire communication network, despite efforts by the government and smartphone manufacturers to combat spam calls. Since this step is only a reference at this point, the actual development timeline is still unclear and may take several years to be fully completed. The “experts” told Trai that a KYC-based caller identification mechanism will protect users from the rising incidence of spam calls and fraud.
