Mumbai: Teen dies after beating, live-in partner arrested for murder

A 19-year-old woman who was beaten by her 22-year-old partner died late Sunday night in Andheri (East) in the early hours of Monday. The woman’s partner took her to a government hospital on Monday afternoon and tried to blame her ex-boyfriend. But based on eyewitness accounts, the police booked him for premeditated murder.

The accused, Stephen Morris, 22, works with an online delivery service. He lives with his mother in a chole in the Mahakali Caves. He had a relationship with the deceased, Rehana Sheikh, 19, during the past year. Police said Sheikh’s family did not approve of their relationship. The sheikh stayed with Maurice in his place with his mother.

Police said the couple used to quarrel because of the sheikh’s ex-boyfriend. On Sunday evening, at 11 p.m., the police said they fought again and Morris assaulted the sheikh with a belt and both shoulders in the presence of his mother.

Then he fell asleep, and upon awakening at 11 am, he saw the old man lying unconscious. Police said he tried to wake her up and later transferred her to Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri (east), where she was pronounced dead before she was admitted to hospital.

Police said that when Sheikh’s father asked about Morris, he told the first that her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her. MIDC police inquired with people in the area, who said they heard screams coming from Morris’ house and said the couple had a fight that night, police said. Police said they are filing an FIR report against Morris. He was arrested.
