Mumbai Indians Clinch Third IPL Title With One-Run Victory in Final

On the back of an extraordinary campaign in the 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League, the Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma reached the final of the tournament, looking to claim a third title. At Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad, Rising Pune Super Giant was up against the team with their first and last chance to lift the IPL trophy.

After winning the lottery, Rohit Sharma picked the bat first with the hope of getting a good overall on the board. However, the decision soon seemed to bounce back after Mumbai lost both openers in the third round of innings. Jaydev gave Unadkat Pune an early advantage over the IPL champion and soon the other bowlers joined the party.

Pune tamed Mumbai Indians’ running rate as they struggled to speed up the scoring amid a wicket drop. After 11 times, the Mumbai Indians were reeling at 65/5 as Kronal Pandya attempted to get back on track with his floppy roles. With a little support from Mitchell Johnson, Pandya took Mumbai to 129 before being knocked out at 47 in his last inning ball.

With only 130 left to chase, the Rising Pune Super Giant fan camp should have been fancying the chance to lift the trophy. Despite the early fall of opener Rahul Tripathi, Pune got off to a good start as she reached 71 before dropping the second wicket.

While the chase still seemed largely under Pune’s control, Mumbai returned with a run rate control.

With Steve Smith set to curl up, Byon was the favorite to chase 11 from the last finish but Mitchell Johnson had different plans.

Johnson first knocked out Manoj Tiwari and followed up with a Steve Smith wicket to boost Mumbai’s chances of a third IPL title.

And it all ended up being the final delivery with Byun needing four to win.

Johnson threw a full ball down the middle to Daniel Christian who shot it across the middle of the field. Meanwhile, the hitters completed two rounds and were charging for a third but Parthif provided the timely bail for the Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai clinched the match in a thrilling last ball match and became the first team to win the IPL title for the third time.
