Mithali Raj ‘overwhelmed by this thoughtfully worded acknowledgment’ by PM Modi | Cricket

Former India women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj on Saturday said she was overwhelmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “thoughtful words of acknowledgment” of his contribution to the sport.

The Prime Minister wished the Indian batsman well after she announced her retirement from international cricket last month, saying the player has been an inspiration to many athletes.

“It is an honor and a matter of pride to receive such kind encouragement from our honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji who is a role model and inspiration to millions including myself. I am overwhelmed by the reception of these thoughtful words of my contribution. Cricket,” Mithali tweeted.

“I will cherish this forever. I feel inspired and encouraged for my next chapter and strive to live up to the expectations of our honorable Prime Minister in contributing to the growth of Indian sports,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.

Mithali ended her brilliant career after scoring 7805 ODI runs in 232 matches at an average of over 50. He scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is, along with 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four fifties.

The 39-year-old Indian finished his career as the top run-scorer in ODI cricket, 1813 runs ahead of the next highest — England’s Charlotte Edwards.

In a letter to Mithali, who retired after a 23-year career, he said, “You have served Indian cricket for over two decades. You have been blessed with the talent, tenacity and transformative edge required to excel over the years. This passion has not only helped you but also inspired many budding sportspersons.

The Prime Minister said, “One way to view your career is through numbers. In your long sporting career, there are many records that you have broken and that you have created. These achievements, including your being the top run-scorer in women’s international cricket, speak volumes about your capabilities.”

“But, at the same time, your success is beyond statistics and records. You are a trend-setter, an athlete who has broken many glass ceilings and is a wonderful source of motivation for others.”
