Minister of edu Dharmendra Pradhan visits IISER Pune, inaugurates health facility

Pradhan laid the groundwork for the Department of Data Science, which forms the synthesis of three foundations of data science – statistics and probability, applied mathematics and computer science

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, visited IISER Pune on Friday to inaugurate the ‘Data Science Division’ and ‘National Facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease’.

Pradhan laid the foundation for the Data Science Department, which forms the synthesis of three foundations of data science – statistics and probability, applied mathematics and computer science. The department focuses on a three-stage strategy of education, research and innovation, to develop competencies in theoretical foundations, the development of new approaches and various applications. It seeks to foster collaboration not only with other departments within the organization but also within the industry.

Pradhan inaugurated the National Facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease. According to data provided by IISER, established with funding from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, the objective behind creating a national facility for gene function in health and disease is to knock-out and transgenic animals. During his brief visit, Pradhan interacted with various faculty of the institute, which provided an overview of the research and academic activities of the institute. During his interaction with the faculty, Pradhan said, “The ongoing work at the institute is commendable and the organization should be able to develop some of its activities to reach more students across the country and address such issues. He also visited the Param Brahma Supercomputer facility in the institute.
