Medvedev cruises past Bagnis to begin Roland Garros campaign

Daniil Medvedev got his start in winning at the French Open – which is by no means certain for the second-seeded Russian.

The US Open champion defeated Argentina’s Facundo Bagnes 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 at Susan Lenglin Court.

Medvedev reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year after four consecutive first-round defeats.

The Russian scored his first victory since he underwent hernia surgery nearly two months ago. He lost his opening match at the Geneva Open last week upon his return.

Medvedev reached the final of the Australian Open this year, losing to Rafael Nadal in five sets.

Danish teenager Holger Ron beat 14th seed Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the French Open.

The 19-year-old won the BMW Open this month and had reached the semi-finals in Lyon last week.

Shapovalov fought back in the third set to force the tiebreak but fell back 3-1 and couldn’t recover, sending a long forehand on match point.

Ron won the French Open Junior Championships in 2019.

He defeated Denmark’s Alexander Zverev on the way to his first Tour title in Munich.
