Married woman ‘raped’ twice by Facebook friend who promised her financial help

Mumbai Police have arrested an employee of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for befriending and raping a woman on social media for allegedly helping her financially. The accused was arrested on Thursday and brought before a court that returned him to police custody.

About six months ago, the accused, Suss Campbell, sent a friend request to the victim, who resides in the eastern suburbs of the city, via Facebook, an officer said. When she didn’t accept the request, he started sending her messages on Facebook Messenger that she responded to. Later, they exchanged numbers and talked over a period of time. During their conversation, the woman told him that she had recently married and that her husband was facing a financial crisis.

She said her husband took a loan from a girlfriend that they could not repay. She added that her husband’s friend was harassing them to return the money. The accused told her he could help them with money and asked the woman to meet him in Chembur. According to the victim, the accused raped her in the hostel. He did not offer her financial assistance.

When the woman threatened to file a complaint against him, he called her back to Chembur and promised to pay her money, but he allegedly raped her again.
