Lionel Messi Left a Deep Impression on me on The Day of Copa America Final vs Brazil: Rodrigo De Paul

Argentinian midfielder Rodrigo de Paul has spoken about how Lionel Messi made a huge impression on him during last season’s Copa America final. Messi led Argentina to their first major title after 28 years where he also won the Player of the Tournament award for his tournaments throughout the tournament. The Copa America win also earned Messi the seventh Ballon d’Or award last year.

De Paul shared a great camaraderie with Messi both on and off the field as the duo often witnessed training together for Argentina recently.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder has said he admires the Paris Saint-Germain striker and has opened up about his relationship with him.

“With Leo, we hit positive vibes from the first moment. I liked him before and today too, more as a person. He made a deep impression on me on the day of the final with Brazil,” De Paul told No Es Tan Tarde.

“That day was either good or hell for him and it was as calm as can be. It gives me great pleasure to team up with Leo’s dream (to win the America’s Cup).”

De Paul is not the only Argentine player to have praised Messi, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez recently called Messi “the best in the world”.

“A year ago we were nothing and today we are [World Cup] Candidates because we won titles. We will always be favourites because we have the best in the world (in Lionel Messi). We are all black fighting for it! TUDN quotes Martinez as saying.

In 2021, Argentina defeated arch-rivals Brazil in the Copa America final by 1-0 to lift the prestigious trophy after 28 long years. It also turned out that Argentina’s fifteenth title in the Copa America is Messi’s first international title.

Messi, who is arguably the greatest player in the history of the game, left Barcelona after 17 years in 2021, and the Argentine scored 672 goals and provided 266 assists for the Catalan giants. However, his first season at Paris Saint-Germain was not the best by his standards as he managed to score only 11 goals and provided 15 assists.
