Lalu shifted to Delhi for treatment at AIIMS

Ailing Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad (74) was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi in an air ambulance on Wednesday evening, people familiar with the matter said.

Prasad was shifted to Delhi by air ambulance for further management. He was earlier being treated by doctors at AIIMS. “The family wanted to take him to Delhi,” said a person who did not wish to be named.

Earlier in the day, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Health Minister Mangal Pandey met Prasad at Patna Hospital and inquired about his health.

Doctors said Prasad’s condition is stable. The family and the hospital administration are in close touch and will decide whether to take him to Delhi for better management,” Pandey told reporters waiting outside the hospital earlier in the day.

Prasad is being treated at Paras HMRI Hospital in Patna on July 4 after he fractured his right shoulder and back bone after falling on the stairs of his residence on July 2.

CM Kumar spoke to a team of doctors who visited the ailing RJD leader in the presence of Prasad’s sons Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav.

Speaking to reporters later, Kumar said Laluji’s condition has improved slightly since his admission. But, it is right to take him to Delhi for better treatment. I pray for his speedy recovery. ”

Kumar was also asked about his old ties with Prasad, with whom his political rivalry is well known. “We go back a long way. We both know each other from childhood,” said the chief minister, who, though younger than Prasad, is now 70 himself.

He said that the RJD chief would get assistance from the state government for medical expenses as per rules.

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav thanked “people of all political affiliations” who called and expressed their sympathy during this difficult time.

The chief minister has been in touch since my father was admitted to the hospital. Yesterday, apart from Sonia ji (Congress president) and Priyanka ji, I got a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the young leader.

A known case of obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease, with heart valve replacement, Prasad continues BiPAP oxygen support. He retained some carbon dioxide, which was washed from his lungs by doctors at Paras. This led to respiratory distress, resulting in him requiring intermittent BiPAP oxygen support, according to his treating physician.

Prasad was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi earlier this year after his condition deteriorated.

The former chief minister, who was accused in the first fodder scam case, was jailed in December 2017. Since then, he has been convicted in four other cases related to the same scam.

The Jharkhand High Court granted bail to the RJD chief on April 22 this year 139.35 crore Doranda treasury case related to fodder scam. Ailing Prasad was in Delhi after his release from jail in April and returned to Patna on May 25 with elder daughter Misa Bharti, who has been staying at his Delhi residence since being released on bail.

In connection with the fifth fodder scam case, a special CBI court in Ranchi had in February convicted the RJD chief of fraudulent withdrawal from the Doranda treasury. On February 21, he was sentenced to five years in prison and fined 60 lakhs in fodder scam case. During the scandal, Prasad held the finance portfolio of undivided Bihar, where he was the chief minister.
