Irfan Pathan tweets stern message for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli | Cricket

Moments after the BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies on Wednesday, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan was not particularly happy about it. Without actually taking any names, Pathan said “No one returns to form during the rest…”, implying that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been dropped from the squad.

Both Kohli and Rohit featured in the Indian Premier League after the duo skipped the limited-overs series at home against South Africa. Both were set to return to action in the rescheduled fifth Test between India and England, which the former lost by seven wickets.

While Kohli participated in the competition, Rohit was sidelined after testing positive for Covid-19. The two are offering their services in the white-ball series against England starting on Thursday. Rohit will return to action in the first T20I in Hampshire, while Kohli and other senior members will be joined by the second encounter in Edgbaston on July 9.

However, with the T20 World Cup around the corner and Kohli’s lean patch still hurting the team and their fans, Pathan feels that resting key players is not a good idea.

Kohli scored just 11 and 20 in both innings of the Edgbaston Test and had a below-average outing considering his reputation in the IPL. He scored 341 runs in 16 innings at an average of 22.73, which also included three golden ducks.

Meanwhile, in the absence of Kohli, Rohit and other key players, Shikhar Dhawan will lead the side in the ODI against West Indies and will be Ravindra Jadeja’s vice-captain. The T20I squad is yet to be announced.

India will play three ODIs against West Indies from July 22. It will be followed by a five-match T20I series with the first scheduled match on July 29.
