International Day of Action for Women’s Health Day 2022: The International Day of Action for Women’s Health or International Women’s Health Day is celebrated on 28 May. The aim of this day is to spread awareness about women’s health and rights.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, women have had to bear the brunt of the social and economic consequences. This day aims to raise awareness about issues related to women’s health and well-being such as Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The focus is on reminding everyone of the importance of women’s health.

History and importance of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health

International Women’s Health Day began in 1987 when it was officially recognized by the South African government during that time. As the day begins to be celebrated, the day has become an opportunity to educate and make people aware of the importance of sexual and reproductive health and women’s rights.

The need to educate women around the world about health issues, regardless of factors including religion and age, continues to be of paramount importance.

This year, a worldwide activist appealed to everyone to “resist and carry on” amid crises and global uncertainty, continuing to emphasize that women’s health is fundamental and sexual and reproductive rights.

In the context of post-pandemic recovery, activists continue to hold governments accountable for the gender effects of the pandemic that have yet to be addressed. These factors include loss of livelihoods, increased risks of gender-based violence, increased burdens of unpaid care for women and girls, and barriers to accessing basic sexual and reproductive health services, along with safe abortion and post-abortion care.
