Indian GM Viswanathan Anand Continues Bull Run, Leads Field

Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand continued his impressive form into the second day of the Superbet Rapid and Blitz Poland Championship event here on Friday, racking up wins in rounds 4 and 5 before local champion Jan-Kryzstof Duda halted his winning streak in round 6. .

Anand leads the field with five wins and a draw, and has amassed 11 points after six rounds.

After jumping the top spot on day one with three impressive wins, the veteran Indian coach bested Ukrainian Kirill Shevchenko in the first match of the day. He followed that up with a stunning victory over the highly-rated Lev Aronian.

In the sixth round, Anand faced Polish star Jan Krzysztof Duda in the French Poulsen attack match, and the duo was satisfied with a tie in 51 moves.

The Indian, who is playing as a wildcard in the tournament, had on Thursday defeated Poland’s Radoslaw Wojciek in the first round, before outpacing American Wesley Su and Anton Korobov (Ukraine).

The event, which is part of the 2022 Grand Chess Tour, features a strong field that includes Fabiano Caruana (USA), Aronian, Su and Report, away from Anand.

The player gets two points for a quick win and one point for a draw.

After nine rounds of Rapid, players will participate in a two-day Blitz event where each player faces the other nine teams twice.
