Young Indian master R Praggnanandhaa beat China’s Wei Yi 2.5-1.5 to book a place in the semi-finals of the online Meltwater Champions Tour Chessable Masters 2022.
16-year-old Pragnananda will face Anish Gehry (Netherlands) in the semi-finals. World number one Magnus Carlsen will face China’s Ding Liren in the other semi-final match.
Jerry and Carlsen scored a comfortable 2.5-0.5 victory over Ariane Toure (Norway) and David Anton Gujaru (Spain), while Liren defeated Azerbaijan’s Shakryar Mamedyarov 2.5-1.5 in the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals against Yi late on Monday, the young Indian star opened with a black-piece win in 90 moves. He built on that great start to take the second game out of his four-game game to go 2-0 up.
The Chinese star bounced back to claim the third game in the series to cut the margins. A fourth-place tie was enough for India’s GM to seal a place in the semi-finals.
Bragnananda had caused a stir earlier in the preliminary stage by defeating Carlsen in the sixth round. He finished fourth behind Anish, Carlsen and Ding Liren.
The other two Indian players – P Harikrishna and Gujrathi on the 16-man court, finished the race outside the top eight and failed to win in the knockout category.
