IIT-Madras launches summer STEM programme for rural school students; check details

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras is launching a summer STEM program for rural school students. This outreach program will take place from 20-25 June 2022.

The university aims to reach at least one of the public school students across the country. Keeping in mind the changing environment of the education sector due to the coronavirus pandemic, this program will be implemented online. It will be taught in both English and Tamil.

As of now, 100 students have been selected to start this program. IIT Madras aims to educate and motivate students to enhance their interest in scientific and technological advancement. The department has given importance to students from disadvantaged groups while selecting students for this programme. This 100 students is just the beginning and more students will be brought in. This program has 70 percent of the practical component and the rest is theory,” Theroux said. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said.

100 class 10 students have been selected by the Department of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. Department officials identify and contact students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and then submit a list to IIT-Madras. The university then contacts these students and arranges transportation, accommodation, etc. Students will spend a week on campus where they will be welcomed with an online group.

Several topics will be taught such as environmental and electronic aspects of engineering, technological growth in renewable energies and applied mathematics, among others.
