Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from the outer layer of the skin. It comes with many health benefits. This helps prevent clogged pores in the skin, leading to fewer cracks. It helps in the production of collagen – the most abundant protein in the body which leads to shiny and glowing skin. Collagen helps promote skin elasticity – reduces the appearance of fine lines and reduces the chance of shrinkage. However, exfoliation must be done properly, or it can damage the skin.

Talking to HT Lifestyle Neha Sharma, a dermatologist and founder, Estik Clinic, has identified some ways to properly exfoliate the skin and take it to a brighter version. “There are different ways to exfoliate your skin. Physical or mechanical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Acids and shavings make chemical exfoliation. But facial scrubs are part of physical exfoliation. They should be started with exfoliators, physical exfoliators should not be used for a couple of minutes, and chemical exfoliators should only be started under the guidance of dermatologists, ”he said.
For dry skin: Physical exfoliation should be done weekly.
For oily skin: For oily type skin, both physical and chemical exfoliation works.
For combined types of skin: Both physical and chemical exfoliation works for combination skin.
For aging skin: Chemical exfoliation is preferred for this type of skin.
For sensitive skin: Dermatologist said exfoliation should be avoided altogether.
Speaking of the exfoliation method, Neha Sharma said, “When using a physical exfoliant like face scrub, first thoroughly clean the face wash. Use a low pressure to prevent irritation and sensitive tears. Exfoliate for only 30 seconds. Follow it with a moisturizer. “
If the skin turns red, in the case of peeling, irritation or inflammation, exfoliation should be avoided. In the case of the use of a drug or benzoyl peroxide or retinol, exfoliation should be avoided, the skin should be prescribed.
