Three people were killed and many burned as a result of a Hyundai i20 car fire on the road they were traveling in when a divider collided with the Jajjar-Meerut National Highway in Sonepat last night, police said on Thursday.
The deceased were third-year MBBS students at Rohtak’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), identified as Pulkit of Narnal, Sandesh of Rewari and Rohit of Gurugram.
The injured Ankit, Narbir and Sombir are being treated at PGIMS, and their condition is worrisome. They are BDS students of the same institution.
The accident occurred when six persons were traveling from Rohtak to Haridwar, a Sonepat police spokesman said.
“The bodies of the victims have been handed over to their family members. The injured persons have been referred to PGIMS in Rohtak, where they are being treated, a spokesman said.
Victims’ classmates and teachers held condolences in Rohtak.
The victim’s father accused of NHAI negligence; An FIR has been registered
Jai Singh, father of deceased Rohit, said: “My son and two of his friends died on the spot. The accident occurred due to the negligence of the project director of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the sanction of the tender. There were no reflectors or blinker lights near the roadside near Bahlgarh in Sonepat. He said the police should take stern action against them.
Roy Station House Officer (SHO) Devender said the accident occurred around 2.30 am when the students were on their way to Haridwar. “The road near Bahlgarh is closed for construction. Three-foot-high cliffs were dumped in the middle of the national highway. We did not see the driver. And the FIR filed under section 304-A (death by negligence) on the complaint of the victim’s father.
An unnamed NHAI official has, however, denied the complainant’s allegations.
“We have put reflectors and a warning panel has been installed. One side of the road is closed by construction work, and the other side is closed as a precautionary measure after considering the recent hailstones. The accident was unfortunate, ”the official added.
