Goa govt issues notice to hotels owned by Leader of Opposition Michael Lobo

The Goa government has issued reason-of-offer notices for two properties owned by opposition leader Michael Lobo. Calangute MLA Lobo was a minister in the previous government headed by Prime Minister Pramod Sawant. He left the BJP to join the Congress ahead of the assembly elections in February.

Town and Country Planning (TCP) Minister Vishwajit Rani said Thursday that his department had found irregularities in two hotel buildings in Calangute – Nazri Resort Hotel and Baga Deck Hotel – both owned by Lobo, and they had issued reason-of-show notices to them. “We have issued a notice that the show has caused the demolition. It is a proper case for demolition… These are the people who give Jian (preaching) to the people of Goa,” said Rani.

The notices have been issued by the North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA) and are to Lobo and others. They state that “many illegal constructions have been carried out” and have issued a reason-of-show notice seeking a response within seven days. Among the irregularities cited by the NGPDA were the approvals in 2007 only for the first and second floors of the Nazri Resort hotel and not even the fourth floor, a swimming pool constructed over 25-40m after approvals and others.

On the Hotel Baga Deck, violations, according to the NGPDA, include the extension of the basement and mezzanine floor beyond the permissions, the parking area unused according to the approved plan and used instead for the swimming pool in the form of a deck, among other violations.

Earlier on Thursday, Lobo had made an exception to the TCP management’s decision to review general development plans was not necessary. He said that every time a new minister took over the administration of the TCP, the plans could not be redesigned.

“What kind of example are you trying to set?” Lupo said, refuting allegations that he changed land use in the area when he was a minister.
