Fit-again Barbora Krejcikova Ready for French Open Title Defence

Barbora Krejsikova said she is fit and mentally fit to defend her French Open title this year after recovering from an elbow injury.

Czech world number two Kryzhikova last played at the Qatar Open in February, a month after winning the Australian Open doubles title with partner Katerina Siniakova.

Indian Wells’ eve pulled out in March due to an elbow injury, which she said was due to her workload in 2021.

“I was injured and had a problem with my elbow, which I didn’t expect would take me away for so long,” Krizhikova told reporters on Friday.

“But I think it was good. I think it was worth it that we get a break after such a tough last season. I feel healthy now, and I have to push the wood to feel good.

“I also think I’m really mentally recharging myself. I’m looking forward to being back on the Tour, coming back in good shape and playing my best players.”

Krijsikova defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win the title last year, completing an impressive transition from doubles specialist to Grand Slam singles champion.

The 26-year-old will begin her title defense by taking on French teen Diane Barry as she is in a round of 16 clash with former world number one Victoria Azarenka.

Krejcikova said she had hoped to play tournaments in preparation for the French Open, but after a discussion with her coach, she chose to focus on being 100% ready for clay.

“We made that decision and I was kind of happy with that,” she said. “I was totally committed to it.”

World number one Iga Swiatek, who won the title at Roland Garros in 2020, is considered the favorite to win this year, because of her amazing shape on clay courts.

Krijsikova praised Swiatek, who arrived in Paris after 28 straight games in a row.

“Iga, amazing play. She was doing a great job on the court. I mean, also off the court. I think she’s also a very good person,” Krejicova said of the Polish top seed.

“She deserves it and I hope at some point I can get close to her and maybe we can fight for first place.”
