Filmmaker Avinash Das detained for tweeting Amit Shah’s pic with arrested IAS officer | Mumbai news

Mumbai: Filmmaker Avinash Das was arrested by the Gujarat Police from the city on Tuesday for tweeting an old photo of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with IAS officer Pooja Singhal, who has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case.

A Mumbai Police official said Das was arrested by a team of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch as he was leaving his house at Madh Jetty around 1.00 pm. A waiting team of Gujarat Police stopped his car and arrested Das. He was later taken to Ahmedabad where a First Information Report was registered against him.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch last month registered an FIR against Das under Section 469 (forgery) of the Indian Penal Code along with provisions relating to the Prevention of Insults to the National Honor Act and the Information Technology Act. Instagram and Facebook accounts with another photo of a woman wearing the national flag.

After the registration of the offence, Das applied for transit anticipatory bail in the Bombay High Court, but withdrew his anticipatory bail application after observing that the court was not inclined to grant him relief.

The filmmaker, known for his 2017 film ‘Anarkali of Aara’, had later applied for pre-arrest bail in the local sessions court in Ahmedabad and the Gujarat High Court and had also offered to apologize for his social media posts, including those of the woman. He wears the national flag, but has not received any immunity from the court.

Pooja Singhal, a 2000-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was arrested by the ED in May this year in connection with a money laundering case related to misappropriation of MGNREGA funds and other charges in the state’s Khunti district.

On May 6 this year, the agency conducted raids and seizures at different locations in four states in connection with the case. 17.49 crore from the residence of Suman Kumar, a chartered accountant related to Singhal and her husband.
