Facing backlash for ‘disrespectful’ comments at CWG, English swimmer Adam Peaty apologised

England swimming legend Adam Peaty has been criticized on social media and by former swimmers for his remark that seemed to suggest the Commonwealth Games didn’t matter after he lost the 100m breaststroke.

Even Australian legend Ian Thorpe was shocked that Petty, who had returned to the sport after an injury to his foot, lost that race, but attention soon turned to Petty’s post-match interview with the BBC which did not go well.

With eventual winner James Welby at his side on Sunday, Betty first complained about hanging on for too long on the building blocks, before saying, “Mission done, back to bed..don’t feel surprised, but I don’t feel bad either.” When the host, Sharon Davis, suggested he was “a little pissed off” and “You really want him. It’s the one you missed,” Betty chose to disagree.

“This will probably be my last attempt tomorrow,” Betty said, “but I’m not bothered by that.” “The Commonwealth for me, in the grand scheme of things… It’s about two years (the Olympics). That’s no disrespect. I’m still four weeks into my program, I can’t put that expectation on myself.”

The former English swimmer, 52-year-old Mark Foster, sitting in a BBC studio, translated Petty’s comments for the audience. “I think he’s trying to say it doesn’t matter, but it does. It’s the Commonwealth Games, it’s a multi-sport event and I think when he was growing up, the Commonwealth Games was such a big deal. But the fact that he won so many Olympics and worlds, maybe he was He tries to downplay it as unimportant.” Foster thinks Beatty’s comments were “disrespectful” as the winner and meet were by his side.

The anger in social media was vented by fans for what they saw as “arrogance”. One said: “Adam Petty doesn’t respect every other athlete at the Commonwealth Games, he acts like he doesn’t care while all the other athletes are trying to win medals.” Another post: “Adam Petty just did one of the worst interviews I’ve ever seen by an athlete. Rejected by #CommonwealthGames and fellow athletes. What aa *****e.” Another posted: “Adam Petty, I think you need to take a deep breath, talk to yourself and look at the swimmers. We used to really respect you and what you were trying to achieve but you’re frustrated with tonight’s comments.”

apology betty

“I want to be responsible for my interview. It came very wrong and I’m apologizing. Not many people will understand it. Sport is like this. I had to put myself in my mind with the fans, and that’s the result,” Beattie told the BBC.

“I’m a much happier man. If anyone knows me, I’m fighting. It means a lot to me—what I’ve been through over the last few months, the last five years. To get my spark back, that’s what it’s about. I’ve fallen seven times, gotten up eight times.” It’s the only one I haven’t won in my career. Very happy. It’s not about the stats – it’s about the race.”
