The Election Commission of India held a review meeting with the Returning Officers and Chief Electoral Officers of all states on Wednesday to assess the preparedness for the upcoming Presidential elections.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey conducted the meeting virtually. “Rajiv Kumar and Anup Chandra Pandey today held a review meeting with Returning Officer PC Modi on the electoral preparations for the upcoming election to the office of the President of India. Assistant Returning Officers and Chief Returning Officers of all States/UTs were also virtually present,” the Commission tweeted.

The Election Commission announced on June 9 that the presidential election will be held on July 18 and the counting of votes will be held on July 21. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu. , the opposition candidate is former Union Minister Yahswant Sinha.

Kumar emphasized the need for accurate management, the election body said. “He (Rajeev Kumar) reiterated that the RO and ARO will adhere to the highest level of compliance with all statutory procedures and instructions for free and fair elections,” it said.

Pandey said the meeting followed a workshop to assert that elections would be conducted in a free and fair manner. “He congratulated the RO, AROs and their teams for their commitment and expressed confidence that the presidential elections will be held in a free, fair and transparent manner,” the commission said.

The Commission has already directed the states on various aspects of election conduct like establishment of polling station, printing of ballots, secrecy of ballot, security of ballot boxes and other voting machines. “Specially designed ballot box(es), ballot papers and election materials need to be sent to polling stations in a safe and timely manner. The EC tweeted that the ECI has instructed various government departments to ensure safe and smooth transportation of ballots and voting materials.

In accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution and Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Election Rules, 1974, the Commission has updated the list of members of the Electoral College for the 2022 Presidential Election.
