‘Do CSK really want a captain with 200 runs at SR of 128?’: Aus legend on Dhoni | Cricket

Chennai Super Kings fans have two questions before they make their final appearance in the ongoing 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) – MS Dhoni will be available for IPL 2023 and yes, whether he will remain captain. If Dhoni makes the first game clear, CSK has not yet made a decision on whether he will continue as captain for next season. And to weigh in on the debate, former CSK opener Matthew Hayden delivered his verdict. (Follow the full scope of IPL 2022)

Speaking with Star Sports before the start of the CSK-RR match at Wankhede Stadium on Friday, Hayden admitted that it was an “emotional decision” for the franchise considering Dhoni’s love and support as a captain. If personal appearances are a factor than the 41-year-old’s lack of a chance to lead the team next season, Chennai fans have won over the years.

Hayden has further based his opinion on comparing Dhoni’s numbers with Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson. Despite Samson’s offer as a batter, he feels more than Dhoni, whose contributions have been questioned.

“This is really tough. It depends on what the franchise expects. If you want a leader who has scored 200 at 128 strikeouts this season, no problem. He still has the power in his hand. He is one of the most experienced captains in the entire IPL and he has got those titles behind his name and that team behind him.

“If you look at their actual offer, I say there’s no chance of playing. Look at Samson, who has scored over 300 runs at an average of 30 and it is still questioned whether this is a big enough contribution as a captain. So these are measured and it can be a very emotional decision. Listen to how the audience responds to him. And that’s very important and that’s why I failed to buy into this conversation.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who was part of the same conversation, also contradicted Hayden’s words and opined that Dhoni should continue his role next year.

“With the legend MS Dhoni, you want to move on. You can’t get enough of him, that’s the thing. When Sachin retired, it was a sad moment, because suddenly we were like, ‘Hello! We’re not going to see his game tomorrow! ‘ So I think we know he will play a few more games for MSD next year and that’s why we want him to continue, ”he said.
