Krizhikova, who defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the 2021 final to win her first Grand Slam title, has arrived at Roland Garros without any competitive matches since February due to an elbow injury.

But she passed through the opening set against the 97th seed Barry, who was facing a top-10 opponent for the first time in her career, in 34 minutes before her rust showed up.

19-year-old Barry turned the match upside down by winning the second set as fouls and double fouls began creeping into Krezhikova’s match.

Krizhikova lost a long break after losing the second set and was booed by the partisan French fans at Stade Philippe Chatrier on her return.

The 26-year-old Czech got an early break in the deciding set, but Barry, motivated by the fans, tied things up 2-2 and then took the decisive break in the eighth game.

Krijikova found the net on match point for her 45th slick foul as Barry completed an impressive win with fans chanting “Barry, Barry” throughout the match.

“It is a dream for me. It has always been my dream to play in this stadium with the French fans to support me,” Barry said during an interview at the stadium.

Obviously they pushed me to victory today. I am the happiest person now. It’s never easy to start on this kind of pitch against the defending champion, you can be a little bit late, which is what happened in the first set but then I was able to relax.”

She will play with Colombian Camila Osorio for a place in the third round.
