Deputy CM inaugurates neurophysiology lab, oxygen plant at SGPGIMS

Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed Clinical Neurophysiology Lab and 1000 LPM (Litre Per Minute) Oxygen PSA Unit at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS).

Speaking about the lab, SGPGIMS Director Professor Radha Krishna Dhiman said it has facilities for various investigations required by patients with brain, spine, blood vessels and muscle disorders. The laboratory has the facility of video electroencephalogram and transcranial doppler for evaluation and treatment of various neurological disorders.

Video electroencephalogram plays a very important role in surgery in 15 to 20% of epilepsy patients who do not respond to medication, he said. Furthermore, patients with neurological disorders need to undergo various tests to diagnose different types of muscular dystrophy and myopathy.

Patients with headaches are treated with magnetic stimulation along with any medication. Transcranial Doppler (TCD), which is used to diagnose medical problems that affect blood flow in the brain, is also done in a clinical neurophysiology lab.

About the oxygen plant, he said that it was donated to the organization by an NGO called ‘Doctors for You’ and would also bear the cost of its maintenance.

“The oxygen unit works on PSA (pressure swing absorption) technique whereby 93% to 94% pure oxygen is obtained from air. It is then supplied to indigent patients admitted to the hospital through a central pipe line system,” he said.

On the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak hailed doctors as gods and compared medical institutions to modern temples.

He spoke about the availability of beds in the premier medical institution and said that it is being increased step by step.

He promised to resolve the grievances of the staff in time. As a mark of respect, the director honored the minister with a memento.

Dr. Rajat Jain, President of NGO ‘Doctors for You’ was felicitated.
